As I was reading I was trying to remind myself that not knowing what came before or after he said this made it out of context in my mind.....

Then I had to laugh because nothing he could possibly say before or after could matter.

What a stupid statement. How is this man still in office? Wasn't there a scandal with the police force...them saying they had more officers than they really had to get more federal money?

Yes there was ... one that ended with the former police chief's resignation. Nagin told him that he could no longer protect him. Now he is doing some sort of security. Bet you can't guess who he is employed by.

So here goes.

I hate the whole racial overtone that has been applied to these tragedies in my state, but the proof is in the pudding. All races in south western Louisiana seem to be slowly coming back to as noraml a life as one could expect. New Orleans used to be a melting pot for all races but it seems that the mayor has his own agenda once again.

Why would anyone make that statement? New Orleans isn't a chocolate city. It is an Acadian city. Creole, yes. Redbone, sure. Louisiana is a cultural melting pot, spiced with all seasonings of the world. That is the way it should be. To come out and say (and not in these words but the sentiment is there) I only want the blacks to return is as racist a statement as anyone could make.

He is a democrat, so like Hillary, he won't be blasted in the media for such and blatantly racial statement. Fortunately, I have my own little corner of the world to complain.

He did offer some explanation and that should be noted.

"I used some analogies and probably didn't hit the mark on my message. But I never intended to offend anyone," Nagin told FOX News. Referring to his critics, he said, "I think if they look at the entire context of what I said, they'll understand the points I was trying to make."

Nagin's speech at the rally also used a statement that God wanted New Orleans to be majority African-American."If I could take anything back, that's what I would take back," Nagin told FOX News. "That was a private conversation I had with a minister a couple of weeks ago. For some reason, and at the moment, that came forth."The mayor said he was trying to comfort blacks by stressing that they are welcome in New Orleans. Nagin added that his comments stemmed from frustrations about violence and confusion about selected people being allowed back to the devastated city.Nagin did not respond to comments he made saying that New Orleans will be a "chocolate" city again.

Now the fact that God want New Orleans to be an African American city was a private conversation between him and a pastor. I guess he is hoping that we are all dumb enough to think that he really doesn't believe that. Wrong! It doesn't matter if it was a conversation with a little tiny bird. He said it once and he said it again in front a national audience now. The best thing he could do is get a backbone and own up to how he really feels. Then he might earn a little respect.

I think, however, that he has eaten one too many mud bugs and has learned how they move when they are scared. Backwards.

His statements were ridiculous and irresponsible, but he did apologize and seemed sincerely apologetic to me.

It's just amazing........Can things get any worse? First hurricane katrina, and now the rebuilding the "Chocolate City"!
I agree with the majority, that it was an unappropriate remark. for the Mayor to make. You would think that the concentration and agenda would be rebuilding the city in "Unity", regardless of the overall population being 67% African Americans.

During the relief efforts, people were sending donations and opening up their homes and communities to house and relocate the hurricane evacuees. I'm sure that the continuos aid that was pouring in wasn't sent based on the evacuees ethincity, but on the basis of need. The genrosity came from all different nationalities, countries and organizations.
New Orleans is a melting pot, for all nationalities, that being said, being an Acadian/Creole from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
We have a long history with our ancestors from New Orleans.

I hope that the city of New Orleans is rebuilt with this in mind, and diversity is what makes each place unique and special in it's own way. Natural disasters have a way of bringing out the best and the worst in people, Do we always have to wait until then to do do the right thing for our neighbour?

CNN.com quotes Nagin as further saying:

"How do you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate, you mix it with white milk, and it becomes a delicious drink. That is the chocolate I am talking about," he said. "New Orleans was a chocolate city before Katrina. It is going to be a chocolate city after. How is that divisive? It is white and black working together, coming together and making something special."

Nagin is pretty darn easy to read if you have your eyes and ears open. He said he "regretted" saying it but he also said it was something he discussed with others earlier and "it just came out". He's said it before. He means it. He is only sorry about any damage he is doing to his career. I do believe he is truly sorry about that.

AngelaMarie, do you have an opinion on that? I'll tell you mine. That part was backtracking moments after he got the reaction of what he said and realized what an idiot he was for saying it. If he really meant that it would be racially diverse again, what was the point of saying it would be a chocolate city because that is how god would want it? His supporters are clamoring to that as his way out of this mess but really, does it make any sense? No, simple ass covering. Plain and simple.

If you think that his apology was sincere, please go find the hundred or so sound bites that exist of him lifting his foot to his mouth only to try and forcefully remove it the next day. He is a racist. He has little care for the people of New Orleans that are not going to vote him back in office. Without a majority African American population he will not be re-elected.
